Lattice Degeneration Q & A

What is lattice degeneration?

Lattice degeneration is a condition that describes abnormal thinning of the peripheral retina. The retina is the tissue that lines the back of the eye and is the vital nerve tissue necessary for sight.  Lattice degeneration is a risk factor for retinal tears, breaks and holes which could lead to a retinal detachment. Close monitoring and possible laser treatment is important to mitigate the risk of retinal detachment and other complications.  Experts aren’t entirely sure what causes lattice degeneration, but there seems to be a genetic component, as it tends to run in families. Other factors that may increase your risk of lattice degeneration include myopia (nearsightedness) and certain diseases, such as Marfan syndrome and Stickler syndrome.

Because lattice degeneration doesn’t present symptoms, it’s typically diagnosed during a routine eye exam. Diagnosis often occurs during a dilated eye exam and scleral depressed exam.
